Australia’s Federal Court has ruled that the new PS3 Jailbreak mochips are to be banned from Australia. This comes despite the fact that a 2005 Supreme Court ruling stated that video game console modchips were legal under Australian law.

Earlier this week, the Federal Court blocked the importation and sale of the new PS3 mod chips. This injunction lasted until August 31st, and yesterday, the Federal Court made it permanent.

All PS Jailbreak brand devices are to be handed over to the courts. However, this ban is strictly to that brand of devices. If you have an alternative method of jailbreaking your PlayStation 3, then you can continue on as if nothing were happening. It was hopped by retailers that this ban would be extended across all modchips, but this is not the case.

This is the second time an Australian court has moved on the sale of a console modification device, following their decision to half sales of R4 cartridges for the Nintendo DS.

Personally, I do not believe this court ruling will have much of a dent in the hacking community. If this is anything like the DS hacking scene, another manufacturer will come up with a popular means of hacking the hardware, which will still leave the hacking community bustling with life. For the DS, the R4 may have been banned, but there are still countless alternatives, such as the AceKard cartridge.

The PlayStation 3 has had a good fight with hackers, keeping them at bay for quite a while. But now that there is a means of hacking the system that is widely known, I think the hackers will be the ones whom end up triumphant regardless of what courts may rule. Besides, you cannot accomplish much by only banning one modchip brand in Australia anyway.

Dragon Age Origins – Ultimate Edition has not been officially confirmed by EA, despite being listed by GameStop and being rated by Austrailia’s OFLC. However, the British Board of Film Classification listed what is to be expected in this upcoming re-release.

This will serve as a proper incentive to drive people towards purchasing the game. This game sold for an amazing price tag to begin with, considering how much content and entertainment it provides. The fact that they are bundling the many DLC titles released and the standalone expansion with the original game at a speculated $60 is pretty amazing. If it does turn out to be that price tag, gamers will be receiving quite the deal.

The components consist of the original game, the Awakening, and all of the previous DLC releases:

Rockstar: L.A. Noire Slated For Early 2011 Release

L.A. Noire, a popular crime thriller to be published by Rockstar, was first revealed way back in 2005. However, it is nearing 2011, and Take-Two Interactive has finally made a statement regarding the release date in their latest financial report.

Evan Wilson, an analyst with Pacific Crest Securities, said that chats with retailers revealed that the game will not be shipping any time soon. Take-Two Interactive publicly delayed L.A. Noire to the first half of 2011.

A reason was not given for the delay. A press release for Take Two’s earnings stated that the release of LA Noire was only expected during the first half of calendar 2011. It has been slated to come out before Halloween. This game has been in development for quite a while, and hones a complex detective story set in the 1940s. The game is being developed by Team Bondi in Australia and being overseen by Brendan McNamara, creator of The Getaway. Rockstar Games is supporting the development by providing tools and other services.

Gamers should not be disappointed in regards to the news. A delay means that more polish is being given to the game prior to the release. A game is better released late and properly than early and bug-ridden.

For a game that has gone through so much time and money, LA Noire better turn out to be one of the best games that Rockstar has pushed for, ever. Keep an eye out for L.A. Noire, slated for an early 2011 release.

Epic Games, the creators of the Gears of War and Unreal Tournament series, will be bringing the Unreal Engine to the Apple iPhone later this year via Project Sword, a multiplayer, sword-based, combat game.

Mike Capps and Donald Mustard, of Epic Games, showed off this first- and third-person sword-play game at Apple’s event in San Francisco this morning, depicting how players can meet up in multiplayer sessions due to the iPhone’s upcoming Game Center matchmaking service.

Project Sword will be bringing, possibly, the best graphics that an iPhone game has to offer. Muster and Capps actually demonstrated a battle with each other in this slashing game. The game looked sharp and the attention to graphical detail was fairly impressive. This game will most likely be strictly played via slashing motions made on your screen. The achievements feature of Game Center was also shown, as notifications popped up as these two Epic developers battled.

If anyone is capable of creating a proper competitive multiplayer game for the iPhone, it would be Epic Games. Many fans, however, are expressing doubt on the feasibility of this game due to the iPhone’s notoriously horrendous game controls. It would make sense for Epic to attempt a sword-based combat game, though, playing to the strengths of what the iPhone has to offer. If anything, this game will be a proper depiction of how effective the Unreal Engine can be on the Apple iPhone.

Project Sword is slated for release on the iPhone this holiday season and a free demo is available via iTunes.

PlatinumGames released their latest action-shooter, Vanquish, onto the Xbox Live marketplace for potential fans to sample. Here is a review on what this demo appears to imply about this intense game.

First off, the game is clearly visually pleasing. The amount of detail in your armor and in the environments is astonishing. This game is very polished and the style is very distinct. You will already see, from a mere 3 minutes of playing, that the bloom effects you experience, coupled with the lighting, will make this game a very visually intensive and entertaining, in that aspect at least. The voice acting, however, is dreadful. Just go watch the official trailer to the game and listen for yourself. The dialog is poorly written and they could have really put more effort in better voice acting. But then again, this game is not trying to use its story and voice acting as its selling point. The clear goal of Vanquish is to keep you in a state of pure chaos and havoc, which it certainly does well.

This game is very fast paced and filled with in your face action. Within 10 seconds of the demo, you enter a battle-zone where you have two enemies shooting your way already. You are able to do hand to hand combat, which is capable enough to dispatch of almost any like-sized enemy, very fluently. You can also toss grenades across long distances, in a stylistic manner might I add. You also have the general features to be expected of a third person shooter, such as a minimal zoom in for further accuracy, being able to swap for a gun dropped by a downed enemy, etc.

The game got very old really quickly for me. The enemies die in a flashy and explosive fashion, but the shooting is very bland. The game plays as if it is meant to be more of a visually pleasing experience rather than an immersive one. You are able to use walls and objects for cover, but you are not able to blind fire, which is fairly disappointing that they left that simple feature out. You can high-jack some of the machines that you will see attacking you, which offers a bit more entertainment. The enemies complete their basic requirements fairly I suppose, simply shooting and ducking. The A.I. seems to be lack luster, judging by how the enemies make no real initiative to kill you and will often stay in the same spot, spraying in your direction.

The demo is fairly short, but it does give enough content for one to be able to judge whether or not they will be impressed by this game. Personally, this game was very lack luster and seemed to cater only to those whom like an extremely chaotic and fast paced third person shooting game. This game reminds me of a sort of 3D Contra. You are constantly being shot at from almost all directions, especially in some of the more intense levels that have been previewed in Vanquish. However, the issue I have with this game is that it does not offer anything new to the genre. There are no distinguishing features that I can find that would warrant purchasing this game over a game like Halo: Reach.

Vanquish is a hate it or love it game. PlatinumGames, the same team that developed Bayonetta, did a good job on the visual appeal of this game, but, judging from the Xbox Live demo, the features are lacking.

Apple To Launch Unified Online Gaming Network

Apple will be revealing it’s unified multiplayer service coming to the iPhone in next week with the release of Apple’s Game Center in iOS 4.1. This service boasts of matchmaking, operating friends lists and more.

Apple revealed its plans for a unified gaming service way back in April, and we have been in the dark since then. The only details revealed were that this Game Center would hone a social gaming network, the ability to invite and track friends, matchmaking, leaderboards and achievements. Today at the Apple event in San Francisco, Steve Jobs revealed that the Game Center would be a part of next week’s iOS 4.1 update for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The new service acts much like a watered down Xbox Live service on the iPhone and iPod Touch. It requires a constant screen name, enhanced multiplayer functionality and score comparisons. It also makes it easier to find other games that are similar to the genre of whatever you are playing at the moment. This may come off as minimally hypocritical, considering how Steve Jobs has complained about how Microsoft has copied off of him. They basically made a carbon copy of Xbox Live, which is certainly one of the first online video game services made available to video game consoles.

For iPad users, they will be able to experience the Game Center in November, when iOS 4.2 is released along with the multi-tasking capability.
